Monotominae is a of small beetles within the Monotomidae, commonly referred to as root-eating beetles. The subfamily contains approximately 10 and more than 80 described . Members are primarily associated with decaying organic matter and fungal . The genus Monotoma, established in 1793, is the type genus and among the most diverse in the group.
