Definition

Minute, wingless hexapods (subclass ) characterized by a , forked springing organ () that allows rapid escape jumps. Formerly classified as insects, springtails are now placed outside Insecta based on molecular and developmental evidence; they possess internal mouthparts (entognathy), lack , and undergo direct development without .
