Usage Notes

Rank is contentious: treated as Class Protura by many modern authors (with orders Acerentomata, Eosentomata, Sinentomata), but as Order Protura within Class or Insecta by others. The group is often omitted from introductory entomology texts due to its cryptic habits and small size. Not true insects under current phylogenetic treatments that restrict Insecta to the crown group containing ectognathous mouthparts.
