Definition

A family of beetles in the superfamily Buprestoidea, characterized by bullet-shaped bodies and often striking metallic coloration. Formerly treated as the subfamily Schizopodinae within Buprestidae, it was elevated to family rank in 1991 based on morphological and phylogenetic studies. The family includes three extant genera—Dystaxia, Glyptoscelimorpha, and Schizopus—distributed primarily in arid and semi-arid regions of western North America.

Etymology

From Greek schizein (to split) + pous, podos (foot), referring to the divided or lobed tarsal structure characteristic of these beetles.
