Usage Notes

This family is rarely encountered in general entomological collections due to its restricted Australian distribution and specialized arid-zone ecology. Formerly placed near Coreidae or Alydidae, modern phylogenomic studies affirm its placement within Pentatomomorpha. The family contains only a handful of described species in two genera (Hyocephalus and Bunyipia). Specimens are recognized by the distinctive globose head, reduced wing venation, and fossorial (burrowing) nymphal stages adapted to sandy soils.
