Definition
A of (Hymenoptera) comprising approximately 80 extant in five , characterized as the sister group to all other living lineages of Hymenoptera and retaining numerous ancestral morphological traits. The family constitutes the sole member of the superfamily Xyeloidea and possesses one of the most extensive fossil records among Hymenoptera, including the oldest known hymenopteran fossils from the Triassic (245–208 million years ago).
