Prototheoridae

Definition

A family of primitive moths in the superfamily Hepialoidea, containing the single genus Prototheora. These insects, commonly called African primitive ghost moths, are endemic to Southern Africa and represent one of the more basal lineages within the hepialoid moths. The family is distinguished by retained plesiomorphic morphological features and limited species diversity compared to the related Hepialidae.

Etymology

From Greek prototheoros 'first observer' or 'primitive watcher', with the family suffix -idae.
