Definition
Endocrine glands found in the thorax and secreting molting hormone (ecdysone) or a closely related ecdysteroid. They are activated by PTTH (prothoracicotropic hormone) during the immature stage and degenerate during or soon after metamorphosis.
Etymology
From the Greek 'prothorax', meaning 'forethorax', and 'glandula' meaning 'glands'.
Example
The prothoracic glands of a butterfly release ecdysone, which triggers molting.
