Usage Notes
Describes orientation, not jaw protrusion alone. In insects, prognathous typically indicates the entire head capsule is tilted forward, not merely that are elongated. Contrast with opisthognathous (rostrum or beak projecting backward beneath the head, as in ) and hypognathous (mouthparts , perpendicular to body axis, typical of many and caterpillars). Some authors distinguish prognathous (mouthparts , head tilted) from proclivous (head tilted forward but mouthparts not necessarily projecting). The term is also used in vertebrate craniofacial anatomy with a different emphasis (maxillary or mandibular protrusion), but in entomology it specifically denotes cephalic orientation.
