A haematophagous mesostigmatid mite ( Macronyssidae) that parasitizes poultry and wild birds. and nymphs feed on blood, causing anemia, reduced production, and feed-conversion losses in commercial laying flocks; heavy can be fatal. Unlike the temporary red mite , O. sylviarum completes its entire on the host, making it a permanent of domestic chickens and a significant pest in intensive poultry systems.
