Neomecoptera

Definition

A proposed order of insects that was once thought to be a distinct group but is now generally considered synonymous with the order Mecoptera. It includes insects with long, slender bodies and large wings.

Etymology

From Greek 'neo-', meaning 'new', and 'Mecoptera', meaning 'long-winged'.

Example

Neomecoptera fossils have been re-evaluated and most are now classified within the order Mecoptera.
