Usage Notes

The mentum is often confounded with the entire in casual description; distinguish it from the more prementum (which carries the palps and ) and the submentum. In some groups—particularly certain —the mentum may be greatly reduced, with the submentum, or modified into distinctive shapes useful in identification. The term is not used for the homologous structure in arachnids, which lack a labium.
