Leucoptera coffeella

Definition

A minute moth species in the family Lyonetiidae (order Lepidoptera), native to and distributed throughout every coffee-growing region of South America, Central America, and the West Indies. The larva is a leaf miner that tunnels through coffee foliage, causing defoliation, reduced photosynthesis, and significant yield losses; it is regarded as one of the most economically damaging pests of coffee (Coffea spp.) in the Neotropics. Adults are small, silvery-white moths with distinctive narrow, lanceolate wings.

Etymology

From Greek leucos (white) + ptera (wings), referring to the pale coloration typical of the genus; coffeella denotes the host association with coffee plants.

Example

In Brazilian coffee plantations, Leucoptera coffeella populations can reach outbreak densities during the dry season, with multiple overlapping generations accelerating leaf damage and necessitating integrated pest management combining parasitoid wasps and selective insecticide applications.

Usage Notes
