Human lice

Definition

Wingless, six-legged bloodsucking insects that belong to the order Phthiraptera. There are three species that infest humans: Pediculus humanus humanus (body louse), Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse), and Phthirus pubis (pubic or crab louse).

Etymology

From Latin 'humanus', meaning 'human', and 'lice' being the common term for these insects.

Example

Human lice are highly host-specific and cannot be transmitted between mammals.
