Definition
A snout ( ) whose larvae are pests of date palms (Phoenix dactylifera), boring into the fruit stalks and fruit clusters. The occurs in arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa and has expanded its range into Mediterranean Europe. are relatively large, dull-colored moths with a wingspan of approximately 25–35 mm.
Etymology
From 'greater' (distinguishing it from related, smaller date-feeding ) and 'date moth' (referring to its association with date palms).
Example
of the greater date in Algerian date groves can cause significant yield losses when larvae tunnel through fruit rachises, causing fruit drop.

Usage Notes
The has been unstable; the was long placed in Aphomia but some recent treatments use Arenipses. The distinguishes this species from the lesser date (Batrachedra amydraula), a smaller related pest of the same crop. Not to be confused with the (), a congeneric stored-product pest.
