Brown planthopper

Definition

A small, winged hemipteran insect (Nilaparvata lugens) in the family Delphacidae that is among the most destructive pests of rice (Oryza sativa). Adults and nymphs feed phloem sap from the stems and leaf sheaths, causing hopperburn—wilting, stunting, and complete crop failure in heavy infestations. The species also vectors two economically significant plant viruses: rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) and rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV). Outbreaks can cause yield losses exceeding 50% in susceptible cultivars, particularly in irrigated lowland rice systems across South and Southeast Asia.

Etymology

From the dull brown coloration of adults and the common name 'planthopper' for delphacid insects that hop when disturbed.
