Definition

A suborder of stoneflies (order Plecoptera) comprising the majority of stonefly species worldwide. Arctoperlaria includes most families traditionally associated with temperate and cold-water habitats, distinguished from the smaller suborder Antarctoperlaria by distribution and certain morphological traits. Members exhibit diverse life histories across lotic and lentic freshwater systems.

Etymology

From Greek arktos (bear, Arctic) + Perla (type genus of stoneflies) + Latin -aria (collective suffix), referring to the predominantly Northern Hemisphere distribution of constituent species.
