Taxonomic History
The was established by H.H. Knight in 1928. Aoplonema princeps, the type , was originally described in the genus Capsus by Uhler in 1894 and later transferred to Aoplonema. The two Rican species were described by Dimitri Forero in 2008 based on material from the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio).
