Identification

Tortistilus are morphologically cryptic and difficult to distinguish from the related Spissistilus based on external alone. Specimens of T. wickhami show considerable morphological variation, with both horned (18% of individuals) and unhorned (82%) present. range from 4.0–5.6 mm in length, with females consistently larger than males. Accurate identification to species level requires phylogenetic analysis of molecular markers such as mt-COI and ITS2 gene fragments.

Habitat

Agricultural , specifically vineyard systems in northern California and Baja California, Mexico. In Napa Valley, specimens were collected from vineyard edges, riparian , and vegetation. The shows higher abundance at vineyard edges than within vineyard rows.

Distribution

North America. Documented from Canada southward through California, with recent first records from Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico. In California, systematically collected across 102 vineyard sites in Napa Valley including Saint Helena, Carneros, Calistoga, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Chiles Valley, Mount Veeder, Oak Knoll, Coombsville, and Atlas Peak.

Behavior

Attracted to yellow panel traps. More frequently captured at vineyard edges (528 specimens) than within vineyard rows (53 specimens). Collected by sweep netting in vegetation (177 specimens).

Investigated as a potential candidate for grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV). Only 6% of whole-body specimens tested positive for GRBV, and critically, 0% of dissected with salivary glands tested positive, indicating no virus acquisition. This contrasts with confirmed vector such as Spissistilus festinus (52% salivary gland positivity). Consequently, T. wickhami is considered an unlikely vector of GRBV.
